When Amina arrived at a refugee settlement in Uganda after fleeing violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, she hoped the hardest days were behind her. But soon, another challenge began affecting her education.
Without reliable access to menstrual supplies, Amina missed school several days each month. She stayed home to avoid embarrassment and discomfort. Over time, she participated less in class and pulled away from activities she once enjoyed.
CWS donors helped make a change possible.
Through donor support, women and girls in the settlement received reusable menstrual supplies along with practical information about how to use and care for them. For Amina, having what she needed meant she could return to school every day. Her grades improved. She raised her hand in class again and became more involved in her community.
The impact reached beyond Amina. Girls who once missed school began attending more consistently. Mothers talked more openly with their daughters. Girls shared what they learned with one another.
